Maria Grever Biography 

Maria Grever, born as Maria Joaquina de la Portilla Torres, was born to Francisco de la Portilla and Julia Torres, who were Mexican nationals, in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico. 

For 6 years of her life, she lived in Mexico City, and in 1891, she and her family moved to Sevilla. She studied music in France with CLaude Debussy  and Franz Lenhard along with many other notable musicians.

In the year 1900, she moved back to Mexico and continued her study at Solfege School, which was owned by her aunt. 

In 1907, when she was 22 years old, Maria got married to Leo A. Grever, an American oil company executive. In 1916, she officially became a US citizen. She and Leo moved to New York City, where they lived for the rest of their lives. 

Maria Grever passed away on December 15, 1951 at the age of 66 years old. At her request, her remains were sent back to Mexico.
